Jack Black & Michael Cera - Year One

Here's some stats for Year One from 5/12/09 - 5/18/09:
sources: wiseflicks.com & flicktrends.com

Overall W-Score
1 stars out of 5

Reception & Perception
  • Regular commentators on the web expect it to be good, with an average score of about 70%
  • Those who voted online really expect it to be worse, giving it about a 25% rating.
Specific Attributes
  • Levels of conversations for all attributes are low.
Quotes
I used to be a casual Michael Cera fan. I thought he was funny in Superbad with his cool nerd type persona. It was in Juno when I realized this guy doesn’t have much depth as an actor, even a comedic actor... Judging by the trailer, it looks like his typecasting continues in Year One. This one also features Jack Black, an actor with much more depth. He also has a proven track record, ranging from Orange County and King Kong, to Kung Fu Panda. These two actors look mediocre together and Cera could have benefited more from Jonah Hill being in this, his Superbad counterpart.

Quotes
It seems absurd that Larry David and Woody Allen haven’t teamed up already, given that it’s such a logical partnership. Our prayers have now been answered with Woody’s whopping 44th film, WHATEVER WORKS.
Source
Critic Perspectives
While Allen's screenplay features plenty of amusing one-liners...its tired handling of so many overly familiar themes eventually proves enervating.

Quotes
Horror fans have no idea how big of a treat is coming their way in the form of Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell! Don't let the PG-13 rating cloud your judgment, folks; this flick is the real deal through-and-through and will likely end up being the best horror related time you'll have at the movies all year!
Source
Critic Perspectives
[The] brand-new self-described "spook-a-blast" is a nasty little bit of cyanide fun, a new Sam Raimi horror film, and it is an indecent amount of fun.

  • Those who voted online really liked it, giving it about a 80% rating.
Specific Attributes

Quotes
Although death has always been a fascinated element in movies, it is not an easy task to handle it all over the screenplay. But with great efforts, the story is told in a clean and beautiful way to guarantee its success as a tear-jerker as well as a comedy. An unexpected win as the best foreign language movie in the 81st Oscars, along with many other awards, offers the movie its deserved credit.

Critic's Perspective
Takita's eccentric film, a serio-comic look at life, death, redemption and forgiveness, is Japan's entry for the Oscars, winning audience awards in festivals, which speak well of its potential commercial appeal outside Japan and Asia.

Specific Attributes

Quotes
Since I'm under embargo, I can't go into any real detail about what I thought about Pixar's newest film, "Up" so I will simply say that it's fantastic (no surprise there) and I was either laughing hysterically, breathlessly excited, or on the verge of tears throughout this film.

Moon - 2001 for 2009

Here's some stats for Moon from 5/5/09 - 5/11/09:
sources: wiseflicks.com & flicktrends.com

Overall W-Score
2 stars out of 5

Reception & Perception
  • Critics love this movie, with a 100% rating
  • Regular commentators on the web anticipate it to be below average, with a score of 35%
  • Voters online were more positive, giving it a rating of 75%
Attributes
  • Appearing completely out of the blue (at least to me!) is the first feature film from Duncan Jones, who surprisingly, is David Bowie’s first son. Moon, starring Sam Rockwell, does reek of 2001-style undertones, however with Rockwell’s screen presence, it seems more human. Don’t get me wrong, 2001 is one of my favorite films of all time, but you really have to let yourself go to really enjoy it.
    Source

Critic Perspectives
The amazing visuals and sound design (make) the movie so riveting, but its ability to let Rockwell shine with such a brilliant and rounded performance will probably be appreciated more.

Reception & Perception
  • Regular commentators on the web anticipate it to be average, with a score of 50%
Specific Attributes
  • The highest levels of conversations surround the production quality, performances delivered, and character fit.
Quotes
I loved the original "Pelham". It's the kind of movie that feels like your own discovery. I adore Walter Matthau, and have lots of respect for Robert Shaw. I like both of them a zillion times more than Travolta or Washington, so this kind of feels like a dilution.

It'd probably be more fun to see the original after the new version, if you haven't seen it. And maybe it's dated, I haven't seen it for a while. Just thinking about it makes me want to re-watch some of Matthau's tough guy roles, like "Charlie Varrick".

  • Regular commentators on the web anticipate it to be the same, with a score of 65%
  • Voters online also gave it a rating of 65%
Specific Attributes
  • The performance is the attribute with the highest level of conversations.
Quotes
This aesthetically pleasing period piece was a spotlight film at this year's Tribeca Film Fest and will open in limited release in the US on May 22nd. Easy Virtue follows a boisterous American woman race car driver who marries a young British man who comes from a family run by a very stuffy mother. The film stars Jessica Biel, Kristin Scott Thomas, Colin Firth, and Ben Barnes. It definitely was a delight to watch!

While its tone occasionally wavers and there are some wobbly performances, this has moments of true lightness, and a welcome sense of whimsy often missing in the costume genre.

Overall W-Score
3 stars out of 5

Reception & Perception
  • Regular commentators on the web anticipate it to be below average, with a score of 35%
  • Voters online were more positive with an average rating of 60%
Specific Attributes
  • The highest sentiments for this movie revolve around production quality and character.
Quotes
I loved both Dan Brown's Robert Langdon novels, but this book, Angels & Demons, was my favorite. I'm hoping the movie will prove to be far better than Da Vinci Code. While this book is just as lengthy and informative with some historical facts, many segments can be removed and you'll still have an intriguing plot to carry the story. However, let's hope screenwriters gave this one better justice.
Source

Critic Perspectives
Taking seriously the criticism of Da Vinci, new film is a breezy if improbable pyscho-religious action-thriller that's better in structure, plot, casting, pacing and even Hanks' shape and hair, not to mention pragmatic message of science aiding religion.

Quotes
There's a new trailer for the upcoming "Land of the Lost" movie, starring Will Ferrell. I watched the original series when I was a kid, and it looks like the movie has been "ferrellized" ( I just made that up) to include ridiculous situations, sexual innuendos, and stupid, crude jokes.

HOWEVER - near the end of the trailer is a big surprise! Hint - this topic is in the correct category.

As long as Steve Coogan and Owen Wilson are back, I’m there. Oh, they are back? Excellent. Ooo, and Amy Adams as Amelia Earhart? Cool. Hank Azaria as an Egyptian pharaoh? Nice. In fact, let’s keep all the neat-o museum people played by hilarious and charismatic actors and get rid of Ben Stiller, and we might have a halfway decent movie. At least it looks like they may have dumped the hokey divorced-dad stuff that weighed down the first movie.
